Logistics and Research Notes

LO3 - Be able to plan the pre-production of a media product.

Working to Timescales/Production Schedule
All media products have a final deadline when the media product must be finished for. Deadlines also help to reduce costs as they give the media company specific timescales which they can use to book things for. Each task within a media product needs it's own specific deadline along with milestones that are used to cheep on track with the overall project. During production, the project needs to be monitored to ensure that timescales are kept to.

Techniques which are used to keep the project on time:
- Individuals are set targets to meet.
- Staff/equipment and locations are booked in advance.
- Regular meetings are held with the various teams.
- Regular meetings are hled with the client to ensure they are happy with the product and that nothing needs to be changed.

Logistics
Logistics - the detailed organisation and implementation of a complex operation.

Logistics are an important part of planning to make sure everything (personnel, props, equipment) is in the right place at the right time. The bigger the project, the more complex this task is. The requirements of a project are analysed so the resources can be given to each task. This must be done quickly and efficiently to avoid going over budget.. By allocating unecessary tasks, incorrect timescales or wrong resoruces costs further money - especially if a proejct overuns. The logistics of a project also concern the need to look at other resources such as transportation, and caring for personnel.

This can be a major task as it can include moving a large number of resources such as:
- cameras
- lighting
- sound recording
- costuming
- refreshments

Research
In the planning pahse, there are 3 main purposes of research.

Audience Research - Information about the propsed target audience is gathered in order to make sure the project targets them in the correct way. Research is done into the target audience's awareness of the product along with their willingness to purchase the product.

Market Research - The media market is corwded so research into project that may be similar helps to create a more targeted approach when developing a media product. How sucessful the media product was along with features within them are also investigated.

Production Research - Once the audience is knwon and the market has been analysed, the production team researches the product itself. Thye do this by:
- collecting source material to be used in the media product.
- establish how viable the project is in itself (will it be sucessful)
- determine what locations and resoruces will be needed to create the project.

Research is carried out during the planing and pre-production of a media product as it is time-consuming and requires a wide variety of resources. Research is carried out by a number of different market and audience research companies such as Ipsos MORI and Touchstone Research. These companies have experience and resources needed in order to carry out in-dept research into audiences and markets. This is a cost-effiecient way of carrying out the researdch so that the media company does not have to waste resoruces.

Staffing
The production of a project requires a large amount of staff with different skills and experience. The production team needs to allocate roles to people to ensure they have enough staff to produce the project durijg the planning phase. The amount of staff needed and the skills they have will depend on how large the media project is. The director's job will be given to someone more experienced while someone who is newer will be given the more basic tasks.
